The Female Athlete Tetrad

The Female Athlete Tetrad

The female athlete triad put forth by the ACSM in 1997 was defined as a triad of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis affecting female athletes. Research on the female athlete triad  during the early to mid 2000’s culminated in an updated definition published by ACSM. The 2007 ACSM positional stand looks at each disorder as it exists on a continuous spectrum instead of a serious pathologic endpoint. The Female Athlete Triad has now become the Female Athlete Tetrad. Medical researchers have added cardiovascular disease after discovering that many women with the other three health issues often have a dysfunction with their blood vessels, making them more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases.
