New Research Links “Sports Hernias” to Hip Impingement

This new study from Hospital for Special Surgery has shown a link between patients with groin and/or lower abdominal groin strain, commonly referred to as “sports hernia” and femoral acetabular impingement(FAI).  There are two types of FAI, CAM and pincher types.  CAM refers to an aspherical femoral head, usually the top part of the femoral neck is aspherical and that portion of the femur can hit up against the acetabulum(hip socket) during movements of flexion and adduction(bringing the leg up towards the chest and in).  Pincher type usually involves a deep socket causing the femoral neck to hit against the outer acetabular rim.
