Our multidisciplinary approach to treatment focuses on providing individualized treatment to each patient based on their specific needs and goals. Treatments are non-invasive and last between 15-30 minutes. Visits include full integration of Active Release Techniques, Graston Technique, joint manipulation, dry needling, functional corrective exercise & rehabilitation, and medical co-management when necessary.

Techniques

Soft Tissue

The muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves can get injured from trauma or repetitive motion and overuse.

Structural

Joints can get compressed, sprained, misaligned and become fixated, resulting in decreased joint movement.

Functional

Once the joints and soft tissues are dealt with through hands on manual treatment, we need to implement some mobility, stability and strengthening exercises to reprogram movement patterns.

The Potomac Integrated Approach

Our treatments are focused around three major pillars, STRUCTURAL, SOFT TISSUE, AND EXERCISE & RECOVERY.

TECHNIQUES:

Soft Tissue:

Fascia, when healthy forms a free gliding interface between and within muscles, allowing free movement to occur. When fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments get mechanically overloaded, injury can occur resulting in fibrosis and adhesions that disrupt the “sliding and gliding” of tissues.

We implement manual release treatments such as Active Release Techniques, Graston Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Release and Dry Needling all to address these soft tissue injuries.

Structural:

MANIPULATION -manipulation of joints allows the restoration of normal joint motion. Joints are lined with irregularly shaped slips of cartilage(meniscus-just like in the knee joint) that can become trapped between the two joint surfaces. This entrapment prevents the joint from gliding properly. A joint that does not glide will cause several problems including:

  • Decreased joint motion
  • Cause pain and inflammation
  • Cause muscle spasm or weakness
  • Poor movement patterns that prematurely wear down joints and lead to arthritis.

Joint manipulation/mobilization involves applying a force across the joint to separate the joint surfaces. This can be done with a short quick thrust (joint manipulation) or with a slow rhythmical movement (mobilization). Either way, gapping the joint releases the joint compression, restoring normal position and motion.

Joint dysfunction occurs when the joints and soft tissues become overloaded. Overload can be caused by poor posture, muscle imbalance, scar tissue, nerve entrapment, trauma, and faulty movement.

Functional:

Exercise rounds out our three pronged approach to treatment. Our patients are encouraged to play an active role in their recovery. The exercises prescribed by our doctors are customized to each individual’s needs and goals. Exercises focus on improving mobility as well as activating muscles for improved stability and better overall movement. These exercises reinforce changes made during manual treatments and they are not a stand alone quick fix.
